KALIBO, Aklan – Severe erosion along the Kalibo River bank threatens the operations of the Metro Kalibo Water District (MKWD).
In the 1990s, MKWD’s pumping station in Barangay Tigayon was put up around 50 meters from the river but an assessment conducted just this week found that the station is now only two meters from the river.
This was attributed to the continued erosion in the riverbank, which is caused by the strong river current.
The erosion poses threat to residents and establishments in areas near the river, MKWD information officer Frederick Buenavidez said.
The families living near the riverbank may lose their homes, he added.
Buenavidez said the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) must implement short-term and long-term solutions to the erosion problem.
He added that the MKWD Water Services Division is now closely coordinating with the DPWH to look for possible solutions.
MKWD is supplying water to consumers in this capital town, New Washington and portions of Banga, Batan and Balete.
Its six pumping stations located in Kalibo and Banga source their water from the Aklan River.
MKWD also supplies water to the Numancia Water District through a bulk water agreement in 2012. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
