SAN JOSE, Antique – Some 615 corn farmers from eight municipalities received several bags of corn seeds from the Department of Agriculture through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist.
Their corn plantations were affected by the El Niño phenomenon.
“The El Niño in the latter part of 2015 up to the early part of 2016 affected 385.46 hectares of farmlands planted with corn,” Assistant Provincial Agriculturist Concepcion Cepe told Philippine Information Agency.
The affected municipalities, based on the record of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, were Patnongon, Sibalom, Bugasong, Valderrama, Laua-an, Hamtic, Tobias Fornier, and Belison.
The seeds served as the government’s assistance to enable the affected corn farmers to recover from their losses.
The identified farmers received hybrid corn seeds.
“Aside from the hybrid corn seeds, the [Agriculture department] also distributed through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist some 217 bags of yellow corn open pollinated variety and 70 bags of glutinous corn seeds,” Cepe said. “These seeds are also aimed at helping improve the farmers’ production and income.” (PIA/PN)
