KALIBO, Aklan – The Diocese of Kalibo denounced the operation of Small Town Lottery (STL) in the province.
The government should stop the “culture of gambling” instead of just regulating and promoting it through small-time lotteries, according to Bishop Jose Corazon Tala-oc.
The faithful, laity and priests must “unite, reflect and act” against gambling, whether legal or illegal, Tala-oc said in a pastoral letter released on March 19.
Tala-oc quoted the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines statement on gambling in 2005: “the form of gambling that is organized, widespread and systemic, whether legal or illegal, is not desirable.”
“It is creating a culture of gambling that is seriously eroding the moral values of our people,” said the bishop.
The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office authorized YetBo Gaming Philippines Corp. to operate STL in Aklan.
YetBo Gaming, which holds office on N. Roldan Street, Barangay Poblacion, aims to start operating on March 25.
“Let’s continue to pray to remain steadfast in our vow to protect our morality and spirituality,” Tala-oc said. “Gambling imperils our lives and the lives of our families and communities, especially our poor brothers and sisters.”
