BACOLOD City – The highly anticipated P20 per kilo rice project officially rolls out in this city today, June 5.

A ceremonial launch will be held at 9 a.m. at Burgos Market, with Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. expected to grace the event.

The City Cooperative and Livelihood Development Office (CCLDO), headed by Brenda Burdeos, is in charge of managing the distribution.

Burdeos confirmed that the city has purchased 5,880 bags of rice worth P7.7 million from the Food Terminal Inc. (FTI).

The P20 per kilo rice project is a national initiative of the DA, with FTI as the implementing arm. Under the program, FTI procures rice from the National Food Authority (NFA) at P33 per kilo and sells it to local government units (LGUs) at a subsidized price of P26.50. LGUs then sell it to their constituents for P20 per kilo, with the P13 subsidy shared between the FTI and the LGU.

Each household is allowed to purchase a maximum of 10 kilos. Priority will be given to solo parents, persons with disabilities (PWDs), senior citizens, and indigent residents on a first-come, first-served basis, according to Burdeos.

Ahead of the official launch, the rice was already made available from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. today at the Libertad and Central Markets.

In the afternoon, the rice will also be available at the Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC) to cater to city employees.

Distribution will continue in selected barangays in the coming days.

Yesterday, June 4, the NFA delivered 480 bags of rice to the BCGC as the initial supply for the program’s implementation in the city./PN
