More than nine in 10 basic goods nationwide will keep the same prices this year, as manufacturers defer increases despite rising production costs.
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said on Wednesday, January 21, that 186 out of 205 stock-keeping units, or about 91 percent, of basic necessities and prime commodities recorded no price changes.
Items with stable prices include sardines in tomato sauce, instant mami noodles, laundry soap, candles, bread, toilet soap, and batteries.
This was as manufacturers agreed to absorb higher costs for raw materials, packaging, logistics and toll-packing. Last year, DTI called on producers to defer price adjustments, particularly during typhoons and the holidays.
“The DTI stays committed to protecting consumers while recognizing the economic realities faced by manufacturers,” Trade Secretary Cristina Roque said.
